Manga & Anime: Sci-Fi's Best Hidden Medium

Today in Hollywood we're seeing a resurgence of the Sci Fi genre. Both TV series and films with special effects involved makes Sci-Fi now more prevalent than ever. From the Matrix to Annihilation, audiences have left theaters bewildered, marveling at the latest achievement in the genre. Little did they know these concepts were discussed and covered arguably in a better way, decades before ever being released in theaters.

It is known that many famous science fiction screenwriters attribute their inspiration to Japanese Manga. For the Matrix and the Wachowski's, it's Akira (1988) and Ghost in the Shell (1995).

With James Cameron's Avatar, it was Princess Mononoke.

Edgar Wright even claimed that he watched Naruto to gain inspiration for Scott Pilgrim vs the World.

It's not all that uncommon when analyzing how beautifully visualized the sources of these writers inspiration are. The artwork in manga is unparalleled when it comes to details. Grandiose, ambitious concepts are brought to life on paper. Machines and worlds that a mind set behind the camera couldn't dream of imagining. The medium supports Sci Fi perfectly, it serves as an otherworldly portal to this world so organically, it's clear without anime or manga, the genre of Science Fiction would struggle greatly and not be as prevalent as it is today.
